Scalp Disorders

Understand the causes that can trigger different scalp conditions and be confident that we can help treat your problem.

DANDRUFF

Are you suffering from a flaky itchy scalp?

Dandruff is a common scalp disorder which many men will experience at some point of their life.

Dandruff is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp and often flares up if you are under stress. The appearance of dandruff can vary from mild to moderate flakes to a severe build-up of dandruff.

Your scalp should not give you any discomfort, unless you are over scratching, and there should be no redness or inflammation. If you do have any of these symptoms you may have a different scalp condition and should seek a professional diagnosis from our Trichologists.

Causes of dandruff can include: stress, frequent exposure to extreme heat and cold, poor diet, lack of sleep and not shampooing often enough.

PSORIASIS

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder, the exact cause is unknown but it can be triggered by: stress, food allergies or an infection.

SEBORROEIC DERMATITIS

This is a common inflammatory skin condition that appears in babies (known as Cradle Cap) and adults. It is recognisable by yellow crusted inflammatory patches of scaling, usually around the hair line and sometimes in skin folds on the body.

Seborroeic Dermatitis occurs when there is excessive sebum from the oil glands of the skin. If untreated the affected area will become itchy and sore.

Causes of Seborroeic Dermatitis can include: seasonal changes, fatigue or stress, poor diet, hormonal fluctuations and an illness.

PITYRIASIS AMIANTACEA

This scalp condition is characterised by thick white scale that sticks to the base of the hair. Sometimes the hair is stuck to the scalp by the scale.

The cause is not known but this condition is often seen with Psoriasis suggesting it is an autoimmune disorder.

CONTACT DERMATITIS

Contact Dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that is caused by contact with a substance. There are two types of Contact Dermatitis: irritant dermatitis and allergic dermatitis. On rare occasions both of these types can trigger autoimmune problems such as Psoriasis and Alopecia Areata.

Irritant dermatitis affects only the area exposed to the substance, while allergic dermatitis can occur away from the contact area. If there is an allergic reaction to a substance it will occur on the second exposure to that substance.

Causes of Contact Dermatitis can include: hair products, chemical straightening, hair colours, stress and food intolerance.
